    Detox.

Your body works really hard to process life, including the physical and mentor stressors we go through, as well as to digest all of the things we put in and on our bodies — from the most nutritious to the most indulgent. I like to help give my body a periodic rest (detox!) from life’s stressors and the more indulgent things I eat – looking at you, red wine and chocolate chip cookies – while simultaneously nourishing my body with whole, raw, fibrous and restorative ingredients to cleanse and balance my body from the inside out. The goal of detoxing is not to lose weight or trim inches, but to…

    Honey

Honey often gets touted as a holistic remedy. If you want my unsolicited opinion, I think honey is incredibly understudied and underutilized – because where it has been studied, honey has proven to have some amazing health benefits. When to eat or use: Daily I am not overly intentional about forcing honey into my daily diet, but because I avoid refined sugar whenever possible, honey makes its way into my baked goods, dressings, marinades, tea, hair and skincare regularly, which means it’s part of my lifestyle most days. Classification: Raw or organic, and always local for your regular dose There aren’t currently strict regulations on honey, but raw or organic…

    Mushrooms

Did you know that mushrooms are the onlyproduce in the world that naturally contains Vitamin D? Yep. There is a natural source of Vitamin D besides the sun! Given that mushroom are forest-floor, shade-loving fungi, it seems strange, but to me it’s affirming that there’s something magical about mushrooms. A single, large portobello mushroom contains 120% of your recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D. Their antioxidant punch, Vitamin B, potassium, and beta glucan (read: dietary fiber) content amps mushrooms’ value as a daily superfood. When to eat: Daily Mushrooms are a polarizing food – people love or hate them. I’m firmly in the LOVE camp. Regardless of your mushroom vote…

    Leafy greens

The wonder food of wonder foods. Leafy greens get joked about in bad memes as getting purchased at the grocery store only to have it go bad in the fridge prior to tossing it on trash day…week after week. Sadly, I used to be one of those people. Now I buy enough to eat 4-6 cups of raw leafy greens every day. Sounds excessive, maybe, but let me tell you why you should consider this one habit over most others. When to eat: Daily…multiple times daily. I aim for 4-6 cups of raw leafy greens every day. In a week, this equates to ~2 bunches of kale, a 1 lb…

    Coffee

I am a big coffee fan. It is one of my favorite morning rituals. I love the sound of coffee percolating, the aroma of GOOD roasty beans, the taste of chocolatey bitterness and the heat of my coffee mug in my hands. I love it even more with superfood mix-ins. And a tall Starbucks latte? Heaven. Coffee isn’t a one-size-fits-all drink or one of those things that you should or shouldn’t imbibe, and I say that because for every studied and potential benefit of coffee consumption there are also some question marks and known watch-outs. This is where the 80/20 rule of balance is critical. If coffee is a part…

    Philosophies

I have several philosophies that guide my pantry and product choices, lifestyle habits and rituals. You’ll see these themes crop up throughout my posts and stories, and you might see new ones start to show up as my pantry practice evolves over time. I’d love to hear about the philosophies that guide your lifestyle choices! 80/20 – I eat super clean and whole 80% of the time and shamelessly enjoy red wine, homemade chocolate chips cookies, indulgent dinners on vacation and nights out with the girls. Seasonality – I eat and exercise with the seasons. More squash in the fall, berries in the summer. More outdoor cycling in the summer,…

    Avocado

If you want a sure-fire bet, bet on me eating avocado today. This versatile fruit often gets categorized as a vegetable but regardless of how you classify it, this beauty can be halved, sliced, smashed, diced or dolloped as a side, condiment, or mix-in across each of the meals you eat in a day. When to eat: Daily I tend to eat anywhere from ¼ to a whole avocado each day. I stock up on them at the grocery store weekly. Classification: Non-organic In part because of their thick skins, pesticides have a hard time making their way into the fruit. At the rate I eat these green gems, I’m…
